Our Mandate

Community Cooks Collective (CCC) is a solidarity collective that addresses the issue of food insecurity in Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. We coordinate the weekly cooking, collection, and delivery of meals, cultivating a line of connection that runs from, and between, the kitchens of our participants’ homes to local shelters and similar organizations. CCC celebrates community power by positioning communal cooking as an act of resistance against intersecting systems of oppression. We prioritize centering the voices of those most marginalized in our communities and creating a space that strives to be anti-oppressive, anti-racist, anti-colonialist, anti-ableist, anti-capitalist, queer-positive, trans-positive, feminist, and non-hierarchical.

CCC aims to embody and act on these values through:

  1. The weekly creation and delivery of bulk home-cooked meals that are distributed to local shelters or organizations;
  2. The cultivation and sustenance of community amongst our organizing team, weekly cooking participants, financial donors, and all other active members of the collective; and
  3. The cultivation and sustenance of a macro community that encompasses the circles both around our collective and those we work with—including the clients, employees, and volunteers of these organizations, and the larger unhoused population of Montreal.

CCC strives to better understand the varying positions of privilege that we occupy, and how to use this to address systemic inequalities. We are here because we collectively harbour an excess of resources (time, energy, imagination, money) to invest in our community. As we individually move along a spectrum of increasing and decreasing positions of security throughout our lives, we keep in mind that the safety net of community benefits us all, and that those who find themselves deficient in these resources are crucial and valued members of this larger community. “They” are us and we are “them”; we are all part of the same ecosystem that comprises this community, and the privilege of these resources can be fleeting.

CCC is a living, breathing, and ever-evolving project. What we do and how we do it changes according to our capabilities, our available resources, and our understanding of current communal needs and desires. We believe in engaging in the hard conversations. We believe in being vulnerable, in imagining bold futures, in taking direct action, and in community organizing. We anticipate that we will make mistakes in this ongoing process and are dedicated to being held accountable, correcting ourselves, and learning from our mistakes. We strive to acknowledge, invite, and uphold those absent or underrepresented in our communities, and to be increasingly more inclusive and accessible. If any concerns of accessibility and inclusivity arise, please do not hesitate to contact us through our Facebook page, Instagram account, email (communitycookscollective@gmail.com), or anonymously through our Google participant feedback form found here: https://forms.gle/1a7XQms4bVXnQ6jCA
